AVGAS Contains high levels of lead, and is banned from being used in all areas except in aviation.
There doesnt seem to be any reason for AVGAS to still be allowed, except that the replacement high quality fuel is a bit more expensive.
I asked the EPA for more information, and are we at risk of lead poisoning from the repeated training circuits?
I was referred to a lovely young man who did his PHD on the effects of lead in AVGAS at the Morabbin airport in Melbourne.
And absolutely yes, there is strong evidence that shows there is lead contamination around airports, and there is a high likelihood that these circuits would be contributing to lead poisoning.
However, the EPA lawyers refuse to let them do anything about it.
My contact has suggested we lodge complaints with the Department of Health, and also the Department of Agriculture as the farming land - especially the organic farms - will also be affected.
He has sent several research articles for those who would like to learn more about this issue.
